J-SITE has launched the first ever Torah Yoga class as a Judaic elective on Sunday mornings. We are so excited to have 7 great students participating!! It seems that many students agree that starting their Sunday morning with some stretching poses and focused mind is the right thing to do. During the first few classes we will be thinking about the way our mind works. With the thousands of thoughts that are passing though our mind each day it is hard to take the time to watch our minds ‘in action’. However, it is an important and instrumental skill to have in order to reach our higher self.
Over the first few weeks, we have been talking about the months of Elul and Tishrei; focusing on their spiritual offering. Elul is the last month in the Jewish year and in that month we have a great window – to look back on ourselves and our behavior in the passing year and direct ourselves to the next year that is entering soon after. In Tishrie, after all the praying and cleansing of the high holidays it is time to celebrate our existence. Yoga reminds us to celebrate our physical bodies by taking the time to stretch and strengthen them, and for that we have been letting the following Psalm be our words of wisdom and inspire us:
I will give thank to Thee,
For I’m fearfully and marvelously made;
Wondrous are thy works;
And that my soul knoweth exceedingly
(Psalms 139:14)
In Hebrew we say: ‘Nefesh Breeiaa B’guf Baree’ which translate to: healthy soul inside; a healthy body. Another words: If you want a healthy soul take care of your body first.
Shana Tova everyone!! May we all know health and happiness this coming year.
Namastee’
Nitsa
